Alhaji Aliu Mahama (3 March 1946 – 16 November 2012) be Ghanaian engineer plus politician wey serve as Vice-President of Ghana from 7 January, 2001 to 7 January, 2009. Na he be member of de New Patriotic Party (NPP), wey na he be de first Muslim Vice-President for Ghana.
Early life and education
[edit | edit source]Aliu Mahama be Dagomba man, as he be young boy, he study for Government Secondary School for Tamale from 1960 to 1967 wer na he take ein O-Level and A-Level certificates. After dat, he go Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, ( KNUST) Kumasi from 1967 to 1971 wer na he get ein B.Sc. for Building Technology.
Mahama too be old student of Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). He get two certificates from de Institute, one for Project Planning and Management, den one for Leadership.
Career
[edit | edit source]He start ein working career for Bolgatanga regional office of de State Construction Corporation as Engineer/Construction from 1972 to 1975.
Dem promote am to Assistant Regional Manager wey dem send am go Koforidua Regional Office of de corporation from 1975 go 1976. He hold de post of Regional Manager wey dey in charge of Northern Region, Tamale from June 1976 go August 1982.
For 1982, he successfully set up ein own civil engineering den general construction company, LIDRA Limited, wey na he cam be ein managing director. He sanso be Chairman of Northern Regional Contractors Association from 1996 go December 2000 elections.
Na he be Councilor for Yendi District Council for 1978 den Assemblyman for Tamale Municipal Assembly for 1990. Na he sanso serve as Chairman of Economic Development Committee of Tamale-Louisville Sister State Committee.
Na he be board member for plenty secondary schools for Northern Region, wey dey include Tamale Polytechnic.[1]
He sanso serve as board member for Ghana Premier League team Real Tamale United, wey he be one of de people wey start am.[2]
Personal life
[edit | edit source]He marry Hajia Ramatu Mahama. Dem get son wey name Farouk Aliu Mahama, wey be former Member of Parliament for Yendi constituency den board chair of Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Corporation.[3]
Retirement
[edit | edit source]After two terms as Vice-President, he try get New Patriotic Party ein nomination for 2008 presidential election,[4] but for party convention for December 2007, he no succeed, na he get 6% (146 votes) per of total delegate votes. After dat, he retire from politics.[5]
Death
[edit | edit source]Ghana media spread rumour say he die on 14 November 2012 for Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, buh na ein family den hospital quickly deny am de same day.[6] He finally pass away for de same hospital on 16 November 2012 at age 66 secof heart problem den stroke complications. He die almost four months after Ghana Presido John Atta Mills die.[7][8]
State funeral
[edit | edit source]Dem hold state funeral give am on 18 November 2012, wey hundreds of people attend, follow Islamic funeral prayer rites (Janaza) for Independence Square, Accra.[9] Na he sanso get ceremonial military honours, wey include army procession wey follow ein cortège plus 19-gun salute wey dem normally give to departed Vice-Presidents.[10]
Burial
[edit | edit source]Later, dem carry ein body go Tamale for Northern Region for burial at ein private residence.[11] Na dem bury am for Kalpohin, wey dem sanso bury ein wifey Ramatu Aliu Mahama close to am.[12][13]
