Cauda equina syndrome (CES) be a condition wey dey occur wen de bundle of nerves below de end of de spinal cord dem know as de cauda equina be damaged.[1] Signs den symptoms dey include low back pain, pain wey dey radiate down de leg, numbness around de anus, den loss of bowel anaa bladder control.[2] Onset fi be rapid anaa gradual.[2]

De cause usually be a disc herniation insyd de lower region of de back.[2] Oda causes dey include spinal stenosis, cancer, trauma, epidural abscess, den epidural hematoma.[1][2] De diagnosis be suspected based on symptoms den confirmed by medical imaging such as MRI anaa CT scan.[2][3]

CES generally be treated surgically via laminectomy.[2] Sudden onset be regarded as a medical emergency wey dey require prompt surgical decompression, plus delay wey dey cause permanent loss of function.[4] Permanent bladder problems, sexual dysfunction anaa numbness fi occur despite surgery.[2][3] A poor outcome dey occur insyd about 20% of people despite treatment.[2] About 1 insyd 70,000 people be affected every year.[2] Dem first describe am insyd 1934.[5]
