Erasmus Isaac Kwesi Preko be Ghanaian politician. He serve as minister of state plus member of parliament during de first republic. He be Minister of Fuel and Power from 1965 to 1966. He be member of parliament for Kwahu North constituency from 1954 to 1965, den later member of parliament for Afram constituency from 1965 to 1966.
Early life den education
[edit | edit source]Preko born on 20 May 1920 for Osiem, Akim Abuakwa insyd Eastern Region of Ghana.[1][2][3] Ein parents come from Abetifi for Kwahu District but dem dey live for Akim Abuakwa dat time.
He start ein early school for Abetifi Presbyterian School for 1926 wey he fini plus Standard Seven Certificate for 1936.[4] After dat, he go Enoch Mensah ein Commercial School for Accra from 1936 to 1939. After he work for about ten years, he get scholarship go Presbyterian Secondary School for Odumase (wey now be Presbyterian Boys' Senior High School) for 1948. There he learn get Cambridge School Certificate for 1952. Next year, 1953, he enter Local Government Training School for Accra, den 1954 he travel go United Kingdom go learn advanced Local Government course wey he graduate plus diploma.[4][5]
Career
[edit | edit source]After he finish ein studies for Enoch Mensah ein Commercial School for 1939, Preko get work for U.T.C. for Tamale. As he dey work full-time for de company, he too dey write letters as licensed letter writer plus do small small trading. For 1942, he resign from U.T.C. and travel come south go ein hometown Kwahu. For there, he get job as Assistant State Secretary for Kwahu Native Authority. As he dey do dat work, he too serve as Native Court Registrar. Insyd 1948, he lef go study for Cambridge School Certificate wey he finish get am for 1952. After dat, he return to Kwahu Local Council to serve as Clerk of de Council. He do dis job for two years before he lef again go United Kingdom for further studies. He study get ein diploma and return Ghana for 1955.[6]
Preko chair plenty boards and committees like: Advisory Committee on Registration and Grading of Contractors, Ghana Nautical College, Rail Allocation Committee, plus Central Tender Board. He too serve for boards like: Kwahu Hospital Advisory Board, Presbyterian Secondary School (Presbyterian Boys' Senior High School) Board of Governors, and Techiman Teacher Training College Board of Governors. He be member of Central Tender Board from 1957 go November 1960.[7]
Politics
[edit | edit source]Preko get elect as Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwahu North constituency as independent candidate while he still dey study for United Kingdom for 1954. He come back Ghana (wey den be Gold Coast) for 1955, den he serve as MP plus Parliamentary Secretary till 1956 when dem dissolve parliament. When parliament resume for 1956, he win ein seat again to represent Kwahu North constituency, but dis time as Convention People’s Party (CPP) candidate.[8] As he dey parliament, he serve as vice-chairman for CPP North Kwahu branch. He too serve as Assistant Government Chief Whip, plus Ministerial Secretary in charge of de Land Secretariat, all while he dey do other duties. Insyd September 1961, he get appoint as Deputy Minister for Construction and Communications. Then for June 1965, dem promote am go non-cabinet ministerial position as Minister of Fuel and Power.[9] Na dat same month he become MP for de Afram constituency.[10] He hold all these positions until February 1966 when dem overthrow Nkrumah ein government.
