Eric Kwame Heymann (29 March 1928 – 2 June 1987) be Ghanaian journalist plus politician. He be de first Editor-in-chief of de Accra Evening News.[1][2][3][4] He serve too as Chairman of de Association of Ghana Journalists and Writers. From 1965 to 1966, he be member of parliament for de Buem constituency.

Early life den education

Dem born Heymann insyd Dzelukope near Keta on 29 March 1928 to Edmund Kofi Heymann of de Government Transport Department plus Mrs. Dina Afiwa Heymann wey come from Keta.[5]

He finish ein early education for 1943, den continue go Accra Academy from 1944 to 1947. He start ein sixth form education for Washington Carver Institute for Accra, but political disturbances for 1948 cut ein education short.[6] He become Assistant Secretary for de Club of Ghana Patriots, den later for 1948, he get small training for basic journalism work as he dey work on de Gold Coast Express for Convention Hall insyd Accra.[6]

Career

Heymann start dey make freelance contributions to de Accra Evening News from 3 September 1948, den by dat time, he no dey receive salary. Dat same year, he work with de Gold Coast Express as staff reporter. For there, he climb through de ranks to become senior reporter, den later sub-editor between late 1948 and 1949. During dat same period, Heymann be editor for one secret paper wey dem dey call Freedom Defence Society Link. He become editor of de Gold Coast Express for 1950, den dat same year, he join Daily Graphic where he work as sub-editor, rewrite editor, den acting night editor. Afta he finish ein training with Daily Graphic, Ausco Press Limited employ am make he submit wetin he call “professional information leading to de establishment of Newspapers.”[7][8]

Insyd 1952, Heymann plus one Lawrence Fumadoh edit and publish one newspaper wey dem register for de Post Office, dem call am The People. He join de Accra Evening News (wey later change name to Ghana Evening News den later to Evening News because of plenty libel cases against de paper) for March 1952, den by July dat same year, he become de Editor of de newspaper. Insyd 1957, Heymann join one weekly newspaper called The African Masses, where he do publication together plus Mr. E. C. Quaye. During de later part of 1957, he join Guinea Press. He work there as Editor of demma newspaper The Ghana Star, den for March 1958, he go back to Evening News as Editor. Insyd 1963, Heymann become Chairman of de Association of Ghana Journalists and Writers. He work with Guinea Press till 24 February 1966 when dem overthrow de Nkrumah government. He sana work plus other publishing houses like Star Publishing Company Limited, Ghana News Agency, plus Napado.[9]

Politics

Heymann be member of de Convention People's Party (CPP) plus he believe in Nkrumah ein socialism. Insyd 1965, he enter parliament to represent de Buem constituency under de ticket of de CPP. He take over from Francis Yao Asare, wey dem jail for twenty-one years dat same year on top charges say he defraud de government more than £1 million. Heymann remain for parliament till dem overthrow de Nkrumah government for 1966. Afta dem overthrow Kwame Nkrumah, de National Liberation Council (NLC) jail am for more than two years without trial. During de Third Republic, he join de People's National Party (PNP), wey be one group wey come out from de CPP.[10]

Ein life matter den death

Heymann marry Miss Mercy Sewornu for 1951, but de marriage end for 1956. Later, he marry Miss Aureola Sawyerr for early 1957. He get eleven kiddies from de two marriages. He die on 2 June 1987, at age 59.[11]
