Harlequin-type ichthyosis be a genetic disorder wey dey result in thickened skin over nearly de entire body at birth.[1] De skin dey form large, diamond/trapezoid/rectangle-shaped plates wey be separated by deep cracks.[1] Dese affect de shape of de eyelids, nose, mouth, den ears den limit movement of de arms den legs.[1] Restricted chest movement fi lead to breathing difficulties.[1] Dese plates fall off over several weeks.[2] Oda complications fi include premature birth, infection, problems plus body temperature, den dehydration.[1][3] De condition be de most severe form of ichthyosis (except for syndromes wey include ichthyosis, for example, Neu–Laxova syndrome), a group of genetic disorders wey be characterised by scaly skin.[4]

Harlequin-type ichthyosis be caused by mutations insyd de ABCA12 gene.[1] Dis gene codes for a protein necessary for transporting lipids out of cells insyd de outermost layer of skin.[1] De disorder be autosomal recessive den inherited from parents wey be carriers.[1] Diagnosis often be based on appearance at birth den confirmed by genetic testing.[5] Before birth, amniocentesis anaa ultrasound fi support de diagnosis.[5]
