Hlomane Patrick Chauke be South African politician wey represent de African National Congress (ANC) for de National Assembly from 1994 go 2010, den later from 2016 go 2019. Between dem two times, he serve for North West Provincial Legislature from 2010 go 2014, plus he be de North West ein Member of de Executive Council (MEC) for Sports, Arts plus Culture from November 2010 go May 2012 under Premier Thandi Modise. Insyd de 2019 general election, he no fit win re-election go de National Assembly.
Early life den activism
[edit | edit source]Chauke grow up insyd Swartruggens wey dey insyd present-day North West province,[1] den for de 1980s, he dey active for anti-apartheid activism for Soweto. For 1990, after de apartheid government unban de ANC, he officially join de ANC through dem new branch for Jabavu, Soweto. He sana join de South African Communist Party.[2]
Legislative career

[edit | edit source]After South Africa ein first democratic elections insyd 1994, Chauke represent de ANC insyd Parliament of South Africa. During de first democratic Parliament, he play rugby for Parliament ein team together plus other politicians like Bantu Holomisa den Makhenkesi Stofile. For de third democratic Parliament, he serve as Chairperson of de Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, but after de 2009 general election, he lose dat position come go back to ein earlier role as ordinary Member of de National Assembly.[3]
North West Legislature: 2010–2014
[edit | edit source]Insyd 2010, de ANC ask Chauke make he leave Parliament go serve for North West as deputy campaigns coordinator ahead of de 2011 local elections. According to Mail & Guardian, de party want make he “play an interventionist role” to help settle tensions inside de provincial party plus de provincial Tripartite Alliance.[3] De newspaper report say, for early November 2010, ANC change ein provincial electoral list to put Chauke near de top, make e likely say he go enter North West Provincial Legislature if casual vacancy show.[3]
Truly, on 25 November 2010, de newly elected North West Premier, Thandi Modise, announce say Chauke go join de North West Executive Council as Member of de Executive Council (MEC) for Sports, Arts plus Culture.[4][5] He hold dat office till 3 May 2012, wey Modise do reshuffle, sack am, then replace am plus Tebogo Modise.[6][7] After dem remove am from de Executive Council, he still keep ein seat for de provincial legislature den he chair de legislature ein Standing Committee on Public Accounts.[8]
Return to de National Assembly: 2016–2019
[edit | edit source]Insyd de 2014 general election, Chauke dey number 24 for ANC ein provincial party list, so he just small miss out from getting one of de 23 seats wey ANC win for de provincial legislature. But after de election, Thandi Modise no take up ein seat for de provincial legislature, wey for normal, for make Chauke enter, since he be de next person for de list. But instead, dem swear in Ontlametse Mochware, through one procedure wey no follow de right way. Media sources talk say some ANC officials purposely try bypass de electoral law to block Chauke from coming back, because e be like say some officials no dey happy plus de way he work for de public accounts portfolio.[9]
Halfway through de legislative term, insyd early 2016, Chauke enter back National Assembly to fill one casual vacancy. Insyd May 2018, dem elect am again go ein old position as Chairperson of de Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, wey by dat time dey do one controversial investigation into how de Gupta family get naturalisation. For de 2019 general election, Chauke dey number 154 for ANC ein national list, den he no win re-election to ein legislative seat.[10]
