Joseph Nee Amahtey Hyde (9 October 1933 - 2 January 2024) be Ghanaian accountant plus politician.[1] Between 1996 go 1998, he be president for de Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ghana. He too be de Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Constituency from 1979 till 1981, wey be de time wey dem overthrow de Limann government.
Early life den education
[edit | edit source]J. N. A. Hyde dem born am 9 October, 1933, for Asuboi wey dey near Suhum insyd Eastern Region of Ghana. He be de fourth kiddie among ten siblings. Ein poppie, Henry Ayi Aku Hyde, plus ein mommie, Emelia Ayele Hyde, all be Ga people. Ein poppie ein work for de Methodist church make dem dey move from place to place often.[2]
Hyde ein school journey start for Dodowa Methodist School when he be six years. But as ein poppie ein work dey transfer am, he continue ein primary education for Apedwa insyd Eastern Region, den later for Methodist Boys School for Adabraka, Accra when he be eight years. Financial wahala always dey chase de family, so Hyde for do plenty small-small works to support ein school. Every evening, he dey carry fish from Abola den Jamestown beaches, plus he dey catch crab for Korle Lagoon top just to get money pay ein school fees, buy uniforms den books.[2]
Insyd 1948, he complete Standard Seven den he do top top for de entrance exams for Accra Academy – he rank among de first three students. But he no fit go the school because ein family no get money to pay de school expenses.[2]
Hyde start ein teaching career for Mamprobi Methodist Primary School top, as he dey try push ein education go further. Insyd 1949, he go enroll for Scriba Commercial wey dey inside central business district of Accra, under Chikuchaka Sungo Adjei ein mentorship. When he be just 17 years, Hyde pass de London Chamber of Commerce Advanced Exams inside Accounting, Economics, Commerce, Commercial Law, plus English. Insyd 1958, he pass de Intermediate exams of de Association of Certified and Corporate Accountants (ACCA), den by 1959, he complete Part III too.[2]
Career

Later, he go join de Accounts Department for de University College of The Gold Coast (wey now be University of Ghana). From there, he move go Kwame Nkrumah College of Science and Technology (now Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology), where he rise to become Senior Accounts Clerk. After some few years, Hyde take accountant position for de West Africa Cocoa Research Institute (now Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana) wey dey Tafo, den he act briefly as Secretary too.[3][4][5][6]
In 1962, Hyde travel go United Kingdom top with ein wife for one study tour. After dis trip, he join IBM for 1963, where he concentrate on how to use computers for business purposes. From 1963 to 1964, Hyde install computers for Ibadan University den introduce dem to Electronic Data Processing. He play key role for implementing several applications like de Social Security and National Insurance Scheme (SSNIT) for 1965. Throughout ein career, he serve in different roles for University of Ghana, Kumasi City Council Property and General Rates, Valco, plus de State Housing Corporation.

[edit | edit source]Hyde enter politics by join de People's National Party (PNP) wey he come turn Parliamentary Candidate for Okaikwei Constituency for 1979, den he win as dema Member of Parliament (MP).[7][8][9][10] For Parliament insyd, he serve as Chairman for de Parliamentary Finance Committee until de 1981 coup.[11][12][13] For 1980, Hyde get appointment as Board Chairman for Ashanti Goldfields Corporation. He sana serve as Special Adviser to President Limann during de Third Republic from 1979 go 1981. After de coup d'état for 1981, dem carry am go Nsawam Prison as political prisoner from January 1982 till October 1984.
Ein life matter
[edit | edit source]Hyde marry Dinah Barbara Naa-Djanwah Mingle wey be twenty-one years old for 1958. Dem get five pikin—four boys den one girl.
He be Lodge member for de Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, wey he rise reach de rank of Grand Master for 1987, den he establish de Lodge of Togo for 1989.[14]
For de Methodist Church of Ghana insyd, he serve as Class Leader plus Lay Preacher. He hold plenty Treasurer roles from 1974 go 1987, den he be Diocesan Treasurer plus Circuit Steward from 1992 to 2000. For 1997, he build den donate de Wesley Junior Secondary School to de Methodist Church for Accra.
As he love football well-well, he form den chair de Susubribi Football Club for 1962/63. He be die-hard fan of four UK football clubs: Liverpool, Aston Villa, Manchester United, den Manchester City.
Hyde die on 2 January 2024. Dem do ein funeral service for Wesley Methodist Cathedral for Accra on 27 January 2024.
