Murder of judges
[edit | edit source]During nighttime curfew wey dey insyd 30 June 1982, some unknown men kidnap three judges — Justices Kwadwo Agyei Agyapong, Fred Poku Sarkodee, and Cecilia Koranteng-Addow — plus one retired army officer, Major Sam Acquah, all from demma homes. On 3 July 1982, dem find demma dead bodies burnt for Bundase Military Range, about 50 kilometers from Accra.[3] Dem all dey murdered. Dis four people before dey involved for court cases wey dem order make some prisoners wey dem jail long during de time of de Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) — led by Jerry Rawlings in 1979 — be released. Because of de public pressure, de PNDC government set up Special Investigation Board (SIB) under former Chief Justice Samuel Azu Crabbe to investigate de killings.[4] After de investigation, de SIB recommend make dem prosecute ten people, including PNDC members Joachim Amartey Quaye and Daniel Alolga Akata Pore. One retired army captain, Kojo Tsikata, wey be Special Advisor and Head of National Security under de PNDC, ein name too come up. Plus dat, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, Jerry Rawlings ein wife, ein name pop up too inside allegations say dem fit get hand for de plot.[5] One Chris Asher, during National Reconciliation Commission sitting in 2004, talk say one Amedeka tell am say na Kojo Tsikata give de order for de murders.[6]
Trial den execution

Dem hold all of dem for Nsawam Prison till dem execute dem by firing squad. Squadron Leader George Tagoe, wey be former Ghana Air Force officer plus former AFRC prisoner too, talk for de National Reconciliation Commission say Amartey Quaye tell am for prison say Jerry Rawlings, wey be Chairman of de AFRC by dat time, plus Kojo Tsikata, get hand inside de killing of de judges.[7] Rawlings try clear de allegation say ein government dey cover things up. He try do dis by apparently forcing confessions just before dem execute Amartey Quaye. De execution happen by firing squad for one shooting range “near John Teye Memorial School near Nsawam.”[8]
