Joanmariae Louise Fubbs (born 30 November 1944) be one South African retired politician, educator plus poet. She be member of de ruling African National Congress, den she serve as Member for de Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 1994 to reach 2004, when she be elected to de National Assembly of South Africa. After she be re-elected insyd 2009, she then be elected as chairperson for de Portfolio Committee on Trade plus Industry, position she hold till she leave from Parliament insyd de 2019 general election.
Early life den education
[edit | edit source]Dem born Fubbs on 30 November 1944.[1] She become an activist during ein student days. She graduate Bachelor of Arts insyd Political Science den Psychology from de University of South Africa insyd 1980 follow by earning a BA Honours degree insyd Clinical Psychology insyd 1990[1][2] den next a Master of Science degree insyd Development den Planning from de University of de Witwatersrand insyd 1993.[1] From de SOAS University of London, Fubbs obtain a Postgraduate Diploma insyd Economic Principles insyd 2000 den lastly graduate as a Master of Science insyd Public Policy den Management insyd 2013.[3]
Teaching career
[edit | edit source]Fubbs previously teach at St Benedict's College, a private English-medium high school for boys insyd Bedfordview. While an educator there, de school welcome eight Black learners from Soweto during de anti-apartheid riots insyd de 1970s whom Fubbs allow to stay at ein home.[3]
Political career
[edit | edit source]After ein re-election insyd de 2009 general election, de ANC select Fubbs to chair de Portfolio Committee on Trade den Industry.[3] She be elected unopposed insyd 27 May 2009. Insyd 2012, after vote insyd de Portfolio Committee on Trade den Industry that block de release of ein report by Ferrostaal, ein German-owned arms manufacturer, which say de company only invest 63 million euros den not de 3 billion euros it supposed to spend insyd de controversial Arms Deal. Fubbs say de Democratic Alliance members of de committee have every right to call for de release of de report, but she get legal advice dat if de report release, it go against common law den sana international law.[1]
Parliamentary career
[edit | edit source]Fubbs be elected as ANC member of de National Assembly insyd 2004. During ein first term, she serve as whip of de Joint Budget Committee which later become de Standing Committee on Appropriations, den she be member of de finance portfolio committee. Fubbs chair de Economic Transformation Cluster.[1]
Fubbs be re-elected as chairperson of de Portfolio Committee on Trade den Industry follow de 2014 general election. During ein visit to de South African Pavilion at de Havana International Fair (FIHAV) insyd November 2017, Fubbs say dat South Africa have lots of local products dat it can trade plus Cuba to strengthen trade relations den dat Cuba could serve as de country ein gateway to Caribbean den South American markets.[4]
Follow Jacob Zuma ein resignation as President of South Africa on 14 February 2018, de National Assembly meet de follow day to elect a new president. After Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng announce de call for nominations, newly elect ANC party president, Cyril Ramaphosa, nominate by backbencher ANC MP Patrick Maesela to be de party ein nominee for president insyd de subsequent parliamentary vote. Fubbs second Ramaphosa ein nomination, after which Ramaphosa accept de nomination. Ramaphosa elect president unopposed due to no opposition party field a candidate. During a parliamentary debate later insyd February, Fubbs attempt to pay tribute to Ramaphosa insyd Venda, ein home language, where he laugh den applaud Fubbs. However, de parliamentary sign language interpreter den social media users cannot make out what Fubbs try to say.[5][6]
Fubbs speak out insyd favour of de National Credit Amendment Bill insyd September 2018, saying insyd ein statement: “Dis bill go strengthen de National Credit Amendment Act wey enable South Africa to withstand de worst effects of de global financial meltdown insyd 2008.”[7]
Fubbs no be on de ANC ein electoral list for de 2019 general election den left parliament as a result.[8]
Post-parliamentary career
[edit | edit source]Insyd November 2020, Fubbs appoint as vice chairperson of de South African Sugar Association follow ein nomination by de South African Farmers Development Association.[9]
Poetry
[edit | edit source]Fubbs first write poems at de Orapa diamond mine outside Orapa, Botswana. Ein first two poems be published by de now-defunct literary magazine Staffrider. She write poems about ein work insyd Johannesburg, de streets of Cape Town den ein family. Ein second poetry book, A New Dawn for Humanity, be released insyd December 2018. Ein husband ein stroke inspired her to write de Yesterday is lost today is here den What is Love poems.[3]

A bomb blast insyd 1994 caused Fubbs to lose sight insyd ein right eye.[3]
