Katosi Water Works (KWW), wey dem sanso dey call Katosi Water Treatment Plant, be water purification plus distribution project for Uganda.[1]
Location
[edit | edit source]De water treatment facility dey locate for lakeside town of Katosi, for Ntenjeru subcounty, Mukono District, insyd Buganda Region of Uganda. Katosi dey about 23.5 kilometres (15 mi), by road, south-east of Mukono town, wey be de district headquarters.[2] Dis one be about 53 kilometres (33 mi), by road, south-east of Kampala, wey be capital city of Uganda.[3] De geographical coordinates of de water treatment plant be: 00°07'02.0"N, 32°46'37.0"E (Latitude:0.117222; Longitude:32.776944).[4]
Overview
[edit | edit source]As far back as 2011, Uganda government, thru National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), start plan to build new water treatment facility for Katosi, to add to de ones for Ggaba (Ggaba I, II & III), so dem fit meet water demand of fast growing population of Kampala plus surrounding districts.[5]
GKW Consult GmbH, together plus Alliance Consultants Limited, dem contract dem by NWSC to provide consulting service for design of de new Drinking Water Treatment Plant near Katosi. Tendering plus supervision of construction work dey under dis same consulting contract.[6] De design sanso include pipeline wey go carry water go storage reservoir for Nsumba Hill, about 7 kilometres (4 mi), to de north-west.[7]
Wen e finish, de plant go get initial capacity of 160,000 cubic meters (160,000,000 L) of water daily, wey fit later increase go 240,000 cubic meters (240,000,000 L) per day.[8] De target be about 4.5 million people by 2025 den 7 million by 2040, wey go dey live for Kampala plus surrounding metro area.[6]
Ownership
[edit | edit source]De water treatment facility belong fully to National Water and Sewerage Corporation, wey be government parastatal company wey dey in charge of potable water plus sewerage services for whole country.[1]
Construction
[edit | edit source]De construction of Katosi Water Treatment Plant be part of master plan wey dem call Kampala Water Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Project, wey dem develop for 2011. De project aim be to improve water supply plus sanitation for all de 2 million people wey dey Kampala at dat time.[9][10]
As part of dat program, wey sanso include upgrade of NWSC Ggaba Water Treatment Plant, dem plan build new 120,000 cubic meters (120,000,000 L) per day water treatment plant for Katosi, Mukono District, east of Kampala.[5]
Feasibility study dem BRL Ingenierie SA, IGIP den WE Consult carry am do. For June 2016, GKW Consult GmbH den Alliance Consultants Limited dem select as consulting engineers. Tenders for construction dem advertise for first quarter of 2017, wey dem expect bid evaluation for May 2017.[11]
Dem give contract to consortium wey include Suez International of Egypt den Sogea-Satom of France. For June 2018, NWSC sign agreement plus dem to design den build Katosi Water Works plus intake, storage den transmission infrastructure for contract price of €84 million (USh378 billion). Construction start January 2019 wey dem expect to finish am March 2021.[8][12] As of May 2020, construction reach about 80 percent. Test pumping plan for last quarter of 2020, wey dem expect commissioning for first quarter of 2021.[13]

For February 2019, dem sign agreement between French Development Agency (AFD), wey Stéphanie Rivoal represent, plus Uganda government, wey Finance Minister Matia Kasaija represent, for 20-year USh630 billion (€150 million) loan, wey form part of EIB and AFD funding give dis project.[15][16]
Powering de plant
[edit | edit source]For August 2020, Umeme, wey be biggest electricity distribution company for Uganda, announce say dem dey build dedicated double circuit 33kV power line from dema substation for Mbalala (no be Mbarara), along Kampala–Jinja Highway, to give stable power supply to de water treatment plant. De power line expect to finish for December 2020.[17]
Recent events
[edit | edit source]For April 2021, wen construction nearly finish reach about 95 percent, contractors plus NWSC engineers start test electrical den mechanical systems of de plant. Dem test things like electrical control units, pressure gauges, intake den output pipes, landscaping den staff housing. Commissioning of de full system expect for last week of April 2021.[18]
For September 2021, Uganda Minister of Water and Environment, Sam Cheptoris, NWSC chairman Engineer Badru Kiggundu den NWSC CEO Doctor Silver Mugisha tour de completed plant. De infrastructure include purification plant for Katosi, storage reservoirs for Nsumba Hill den Sonde Hill insyd Mukono District, plus booster pump for Namugongo insyd Wakiso District. Total of 51 kilometres (32 mi) water pipeline connect Katosi plant to Ntinda area for Kampala, wer treated water join NWSC network for Metropolitan Kampala (Kampala City, Mukono District den Wakiso District).[19]
