Lupus, dem formally call systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), be an autoimmune disease insyd wich de body ein immune system mistakenly dey attack healthy tissue insyd chaw parts of de body.[1] Symptoms dey vary among people den fi be mild to severe.[1] Common symptoms dey include painful den swollen joints, fever, chest pain, hair loss, mouth ulcers, swollen lymph nodes, dey feel tired, den a red rash wich be most commonly on de face.[1] Often der be periods of illness, dem call flares, den periods of remission during wich der be few symptoms.[1] Kiddies up to 18 years old dey develop a more severe form of SLE dem term childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus.[2]

Lupus be Latin for 'wolf': na dem so-name de disease insyd de 13th century as na dem think de rash dey appear like a wolf ein bite.[3]

De cause of SLE no be clear.[1] Dem dey think to involve a combination of genetics den environmental factors.[4] Among identical twins, if one be affected der be a 24% chance de oda one sanso go develop de disease.[1] Dem dey believe female sex hormones, sunlight, smoking, vitamin D deficiency, den certain infections to increase a person ein risk.[4] De mechanism dey involve an immune response by autoantibodies against a person ein own tissues.[1] Dese be most commonly anti-nuclear antibodies wey dem dey result in inflammation.[1] Diagnosis fi be difficult wey e base on a combination of symptoms den laboratory tests.[1] Der be a number of oda kinds of lupus erythematosus wey dey include discoid lupus erythematosus, neonatal lupus, den subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus.[1]

Der be no cure for SLE,[1] buh der be experimental den symptomatic treatments.[5] Treatments fi include NSAIDs, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, hydroxychloroquine, den methotrexate.[1] Although corticosteroids be rapidly effective, long-term use dey result in side effects.[6] Alternative medicine no show to affect de disease.[1] Men get higher mortality.[7] SLE significantly dey increase de risk of cardiovascular disease, wey dis be de most common cause of death.[4] While women plus lupus get higher-risk pregnancies, chaw be successful.[1]

Rate of SLE dey vary between countries from 20 to 70 per 100,000.[8] Women of childbearing age be affected about nine times more often dan men.[4] While e most commonly dey begin between de ages of 15 den 45, a wide range of ages fi be affected.[1][8] Those of African, Caribbean, den Chinese descent be at higher risk dan those of European descent.[4][8] Rates of disease insyd de developing world be unclear.[9]
