Edith Mai Padmore, née Wiles (20 August 1916 – 3 July 1988), be Liberian politician.[1] She cam be Liberia dema first female cabinet minister wen dem appoint am as Minister of Health and Welfare for 1972.[2]
Life
[edit | edit source]Dem born Mai Wiles on 20 August 1916 for Monrovia. She be daughter of Richard Wiles, wey be Speaker of the House of Representatives of Liberia, den Mai Grimes, wey be de sisto of Louis Arthur Grimes, former Chief Justice of Liberia.[2] Ein poppie ein mummy be Vai, den ein oda grandparents, dem all come from de West Indies. She get ein education for Trinity Parish School den College of West Africa, wer she graduate as top student for 1934[1] anaa 1935.[2] She teach for a year after graduation.[2] Later, she train for Eugenia Simpson Cooper Secretarial School, den after dat she cam be personal secretary to President Edwin J. Barclay.[1]
For April 1939, she marry future diplomat George A. Padmore.[3] From 1940 reach 1950, she work as secretary to de General Manager of Firestone Plantation Company. After dat, she cam be Executive Secretary to President William Tubman from 1951 reach 1955. For 1956, she follow ein husbie go United States, wer dem appoint am as Ambassador. She help organize de Saniquellie Conference for 1959 den de Monrovia Conference for 1962, wey later lead to de formation of Organisation of African Unity. From 1963 reach 1971, she serve as Special Assistant to President Tubman.[2]
President William Tolbert appoint Padmore as Minister of Health and Welfare on 11 January 1972.[2] She be minister til 1973.[1]
Padmore dey active for Episcopal Diocese of Liberia.[1] Na Mai Padmore be member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.[4] Wey she come die for July 3, 1988.[5]
