Makoti Sibongile Khawula (born 7 December 1954) be South African politician den former anti-apartheid activist from KwaZulu-Natal wey dey serve as Member of de National Assembly of South Africa under Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party since 2014. Khawula be known for how she always insist make she speak Zulu inside Parliament.[1][2]
Early life den education
[edit | edit source]Dem born Khawula on 7 December 1954 for Durban insyd de former Natal Province. She only reach grade 8 for school. Later, she complete certificate in surveying from Durban University of Technology plus one Doctors For Life course in Home Based Care.
Political career

[edit | edit source]Khawula join African National Congress (ANC) den she take part for anti-apartheid activities for Durban communities of Inanda den KwaMashu during de 1980s. She become organiser for ANC insyd 1990. Inside de ANC, she be member of de party ein Women's League, provincial election organiser for 1994, den development activist for de party. She become member of de party ein Regional Executive Committee insyd 2013. She sana be chairperson of both South African Communist Party (SACP) den South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) for ward 54 of de eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. She comot from ANC insyd 2013 den join de newly-formed EFF dat same year.[3]
Parliamentary career
[edit | edit source]Khawula become Member of Parliament on 21 May 2014 afta de 2014 general elections. She get assign make she serve for de Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation den de Portfolio Committee on Women in de Presidency. She quick become known for how she always insist say she go speak isiZulu den isiXhosa when she dey give speeches or ask questions. She talk say she go speak de language of ein constituency. For February 2016, Khawula ask make National Council of Provinces Chairperson, Thandi Modise, address am in isiZulu, sake of she no understand English.[4]
She win re-election for ein second term during de 2019 general elections, den win re-election again for ein third term for de 2024 general elections.[5]
