Masaka–Mbarara Water Supply and Sanitation Project

Masaka–Mbarara Water Supply and Sanitation Project (MMWSSP) be water intake, purification, distribution plus wastewater collection den disposal system wey dey serve Masaka den Mbarara cities for Central Region den Western Region of Uganda. De project aim be to meet water supply den sanitation needs of about 1,055,000 people by 2030. Uganda Ministry of Water and Environment dey handle de work thru de parastatal utility company National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC). Funding (loan plus grants) come from French Development Agency den European Union.[1]
Location

De capital town Isingiro dey about 42 kilometres (26 mi) south-east of Mbarara city, wey be de biggest urban centre for Western Uganda.[2] Isingiro sanso dey about 307 kilometres (191 mi) by road, south-west of Kampala, de capital city of Uganda.[3]
Overview
[edit | edit source]Government of Uganda (GoU) dey improve water supply den sewerage systems for three urban centres for south-west Uganda: Masaka, Mbarara den Isingiro. De improvements sanso go benefit nearby peri-urban areas around de three cities plus over 40 small urban centres insyd de districts. GoU dey work thru Uganda Ministry of Water and Environment, together plus National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), wey be government water den sanitation company. Funding dey cam from loans den grants from Agence française de développement (AFD) den European Union.[4][5]
De water intake point go dey Kagera River wey dey form de southern border of Isingiro District den sanso de international border between Uganda den Tanzania. De raw water go dey pump go place wey dem go build new purification plant. De treated clean water go then dey distribute go Masaka city den surrounding areas, Mbarara city den surrounding areas, den Isingiro town plus nearby rural communities.[6]
Dis project dey link to another government project wey dey go on for same ministry: Isingiro Water Supply and Sanitation Project. Kagera River sanso go serve as raw water source for Isingiro city. NWSC go still execute am, plus funding from AFD.[4][5]

[edit | edit source]For Mbarara City, government dey work plus RSK Uganda, wey be subsidiary of RSK Group from United Kingdom, wey dey do environmental engineering den services.
De detailed work for Mbarara include:[7]
- Rehabilitation of Ruharo Water Treatment Plant from 8,000 cubic meters per day (8,000,000 L/d) to 12,000 cubic meters per day (12,000,000 L/d)[7]
- Expansion den upgrade of transmission pipeline mains of 13 kilometres (8 mi) insyd 2021 den distribution mains pipeline of 27 kilometres (17 mi) insyd 2021[7]
- Expansion den upgrading of sewer network of 8 kilometres (5 mi) insyd 2021[7]
- Rehabilitation of waste stabilization ponds for Katete, Kakoba den Kizungu areas[7]
- Construction of faecal sludge treatment centre plus capacity of 50 cubic metres per day (1,800 cu ft/d)[7]
Construction
[edit | edit source]For October 2022, engineering, procurement den construction (EPC) contract give Sogea-Satom, wey be subsidiary of French company Vinci SA. De work include building new raw water intake for Kagera River, construction of new water treatment plant wey fit handle 30,000 cubic meters (30,000,000 L) every 24 hours. Dem sanso go build suppression station plus lay about 62 kilometres (39 mi) pipelines to distribute clean potable water go about 200,000 customers. About 200 workers go dey employed. De project supposed take about two years. Contract price be €73 million, loan from French Development Agency (AFD).[8]
Developments
[edit | edit source]For January 2023, NWSC get new prefabricated water pumping station wey fit pump 160,000 cubic meters (160,000,000 L) per hour. Dem install am to pump water from Lake Nalubaale go Nabajjuzi water treatment plant for Masaka City. De purified water dem store insyd four reservoirs for Boma, Bwala Hill, Kitovu den Kyabakuza. Dis new station dey work together plus two other pumping stations wey get combined capacity of 230,000 cubic meters (230,000,000 L) per hour. All three stations together dey produce 390,000 cubic meters (390,000,000 L) per hour, wey be about 9,360,000 cubic meters (9.36×109 L) every 24 hours.[9]
Other considerations
[edit | edit source]As of January 2023, Uganda population estimate be about 49 million people. Out of dis, about 7 million people (14.3%) no get access to potable drinking water. Dis project be part of national effort to achieve universal clean water access by 2030.[9]
