Mathibeli Edwin Mokhothu (wey dem born 20 March 1977) be Mosotho educator plus politician wey serve as de Deputy Prime Minister of de Kingdom of Lesotho, plus Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, from 2020 go 2022. He be member of de Democratic Congress, wey he be de party ein leader and former deputy leader. Before de party join coalition plus de All Basotho Convention for May 2020, he be de Leader of de Opposition for de National Assembly. From 2015 go 2017, he serve as Minister of Gender, Youth, Sports and Recreation. Mokhothu be de MP for de Qhoali No. 68 constituency.
Early life and education
[edit | edit source]Dem born Mathibeli Edwin Mokhothu on 20 March 1977 insyd Thaba-Chitja Ha-Potso, Quthing District. Ein poppie be miner. He study for Lesotho College of Education plus National University of Lesotho.[1]
Political career
[edit | edit source]Mokhothu start ein political career by joining Lesotho Congress for Democracy, den later move go Democratic Congress. He first win seat for National Assembly for Qhoali No. 68 constituency inside de 2012 general election. He win again for 2015 general election as Democratic Congress come out as de biggest party wey no get majority. Democratic Congress ein leader Pakalitha Mosisili form coalition den become Prime Minister again. He appoint Mokhothu as Minister of Gender, Youth, Sports and Recreation.[1]
Mokhothu become deputy leader of de Democratic Congress insyd December 2016. De coalition government collapse for 2017 den dem hold general election after dat. De government wey dey power lose de election den new coalition wey de All Basotho Convention lead take over. Mosisili announce say he dey retire from politics for November 2018. Dem hold elective conference for January 2019, wey Mokhothu win as leader. He get 1,681 votes against 84 votes for ein opponent Tlohang Sekhamane. Because of dat, he become de Leader of de Opposition for de National Assembly.[2][3]
Insyd May 2020, All Basotho Convention ein leader Tom Thabane resign as Prime Minister after ein coalition partners pull demma support. Finance Minister Moeketsi Majoro take over as ein successor den form government wey include de Democratic Congress plus other parties. Mokhothu be selected as both Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.[4]
