Insyd Sharia (Islamic Law) niṣāb (نِصاب) be de minimum amount of wealth wey a Muslim for get before dem be obliged to give zakat. De value of de niṣāb originally be set at 20 dinār anaa 200 dirham.[1] De dinār be a gold coin wey dey weigh one mithqal (4.25 grams) den de dirham be a silver coin wey dey weigh 0.7 mithqal (2.975 grams). De relation of 20 dinār den 200 dirham dey reflect de contemporary exchange value between de dinār den de dirham of 1 to 10 insyd de early days of Islam.[2] Over time, de exchange rate between gold den silver shift, so 20 dinār cam be more expensive insyd market value dan 200 dirham. Despite dis, de definition of niṣāb no be altered thru out Islamic history. Both values be accepted insyd Shariah, wey so one fi choose to pay zakat if ein wealth reach de value of either of dem.

Niṣāb for livestock

  • Cattle (wey dey include buffalo, bison, yaks, etc.): thirty animals
  • Sheep den goats: forty animals
  • Camels: five animals

Niṣāb for agricultural products

Der be consensus among Muslim jurists say zakat be applicable to dates, grapes, wheat den barley.[4] According to de majority opinion, zakat sanso be applicable to staples wich fi be stored like: corn, rice, lentils, dry peas den dry beans, while e no be applicable to fruits den vegetables like cucumbers, zucchini, onions, oranges den apricots.[6] De Hanafi school dey apply zakat on all agricultural produce according to de opinion of Imam Abu Hanifa. When zakat dey apply to a plant, de nisab be five Wasaq. Each wasaq be valued as sixty Sa'. Contemporary equivalency of Sa' according to one approximation be 2.03 liters. Therefore, de total nisab for agricultural produce be 609.84 kg.[8]
