Nzema Solar Power Station be a 155 megawatts (208,000 hp) solar power plant, under construction insyd Ghana. If dem plete, de power station go be de largest solar power installation on de African continent.[1]
As of December 2024, de Nzema Solar Power Station insyd Ghana remain incomplete. Initially, na dem envision am to be one of Africa ein largest solar photovoltaic power plants plus a 155 MW capacity. However, na challenges insyd securing adequate financing den sustained project delays prevent am ein completion. E fi reach completion insyd 2026, unless der be further delays.[2]
Location
[edit | edit source]Na de power station dey locate insyd Awiaso Village, Ellembelle District (formerly part of Nzema East District), insyd de Western Region of Ghana, approximately 272 kilometres (169 mi), by road north of de port city of Takoradi. Dis location dey lie approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi), by road, east of de international border plus Ivory Coast.[3]
Overview
[edit | edit source]De power station go use a total of 630,000 solar photo voltaic (PV) modules wich, wen na dem struck by sunlight, go generate direct current (DC) electricity. Using inverters, de DC go be converted to alternating current (AC), wich go be fed insyd de national electricity grid, to power an estimated 100,000 homes. Wen dem plete, e go raise Ghana ein national electricity generating capacity by 6%.[4]
Developers
[edit | edit source]De developer/owner of de power plant be Blue Energy Plc., a United Kingdom-based renewable energy developer. Na de company, receive regulatory approval from de Energy Commission den de Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, de two electricity regulators insyd Ghana. A generation licence den a guaranteed feed-in tariff of US$0.20 per kWh for de plant ein 20-year operational life be secured. A power purchase agreement plus de national electrical supplier ECG, sanso be secured. Mere Power Nzema Limited, na dem form a special vehicle subsidiary of Blue Energy Plc., to develop, build, operate den own de power station. Na e lease 183 hectares (450 acres) near de village of Aiwiaso insyd de Western Region of Ghana for a period of 50 years to build de power station.[5]
Costs, funding den timeline
[edit | edit source]Na dem budget Nzema to cost approximately US$400 million. Blue Energy plan to source dat capital from International financial institutions, multilateral lenders, equity partners den own capital. Plus a guaranteed purchase price of US$0.20 per kWh, dem expect de power plant to break even insyd about 11 years. Dem dey expect construction to be complete insyd October 2016.[6]
