Osei Hyiaman Owusu Afriyie (born 19 September 1923) be Ghanaian lawyer plus politician. He serve as minister of state insyd de first republic. He hold different ministerial positions, some dey include Minister of Labour plus Social Welfare den Minister of Health.
Early life den education
[edit | edit source]Dem born Afriyie on 19 September 1923 insyd Amoafu near Bekwai insyd Ashanti Region. He start ein elementary education for Bekwai Methodist School from 1929 go 1937, den he continue for Achimota College wey now be Achimota School for 1938, wey he take de School Certificate Examination for 1941. After 18 months service as Second Division Clerk insyd de then Education Department, he get Ashanti Confederacy Scholarship to Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone for 1945. There he study economics, political science den commerce. He obtain ein bachelor of commerce degree from King's College wey be college under University of Durham, England for 1948. One year later, de Asanteman Council award am two-year Scholarship to study journalism for King's College, Newcastle-on-Tyne. During dat time, he work as student journalist for Northern Echo, de Hampshire Chronicle den West Africa wey he contribute articles to dem newspapers.[1]
Career den politics
[edit | edit source]Afriyie go back to Ghana insyd 1950 den dem appoint am as State Secretary to de Offinso Traditional Authority. He serve insyd dat position for like 18 months den for 1952 he go back England to study law insyd London School of Economics. He obtain ein Bachelor of Laws Degree den dem call am to de Bar insyd Lincoln's Inn for 1956. He return Ghana den dem call am to de Ghana bar on 29 March 1957. After dat, he set up ein own chambers (Bretuo Chambers) insyd Kumasi.[1][2]
Insyd 1959, some people from Kumasi South Constituency invite am make he contest election to represent dem insyd parliament. He contest under Convention People's Party ticket den he win, enter parliament on 13 April 1959.[3] He still dey do private legal work till July 1960 when dem appoint am as Regional Commissioner (Regional Minister) for Ashanti Region.[4] For October 1961, dem appoint am Minister of Labour plus Social Welfare,[5] position wey later turn Social Welfare plus Community Development,[6] den insyd February 1965 he turn Minister for Health.[7] He serve dat role till 24 February 1966 when dem overthrow de Nkrumah government. He go back private practice for 1967 till dem enstool am as Omanhene of Adankraja Ashanti for 1972.
