Pravin Jamnadas Gordhan (12 April 1949 – 13 September 2024) be a South African politician den anti-apartheid activist who hold various ministerial posts insyd de Cabinet of South Africa. He serve as Minister of Finance from 2009 until 2014, den again from 2015 until 2017, as Minister of Cooperative Governance den Traditional Affairs from 2014 until 2015,[1][2] den as Minister of Public Enterprises from February 2018 until June 2024, when de entire Department of Public Enterprises den ein ministry be abolished follow de 2024 general elections.[3]

Dem born Pravin Gordhan on 12 April 1949 to Indian South African family,[4] insyd Durban, den he finish ein secondary school from Sastri College for 1967.[5][6][7]

Insyd 1973, he graduate from University of Durban-Westville plus Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.[8] He finish ein pharmacy internship at King Edward VIII Hospital insyd 1974 den work dema until 1981.[9]

Early political activism

Gordhan become connected plus members of de Natal Indian Congress (NIC) insyd 1971 den they elect him to ein executive council insyd 1974. During de 1970s, Gordhan help build grassroots organisations wey become involved insyd underground activities den connect plus de African National Congress (ANC) den later de South African Communist Party (SACP).[10]

Insyd 1981 de Natal Provincial Administration sack Gordhan from King Edward VIII Hospital sake of ein political activities while he dey detention. They release am from jail insyd 1982 den put banning orders wey take effect until June 1983. Gordhan turn key figure in de de United Democratic Front (UDF) from 1983 when de NIC turn affiliated organisation.[6][7]

Gordhan attend de preparatory meeting for de Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) insyd 1991 as joint NIC/Transvaal Indian Congress (TIC) representative, den he be appointed NIC/TIC delegate to de steering committee wey get responsibility to organise CODESA 1. Insyd 1993 he be appointed to de panel of chairpersons for de planning committee of de multi-party negotiation process.[11]

Career

Gordhan be previously Commissioner of de South African Revenue Service from 1999 to 2009. From 1991 den 1994, he chair de Convention for a Democratic South Africa, den he be co-Chairman of de Transitional Executive Council, which prepare South Africa for de country's first non-racial election insyd April 1994.[12]

As member of parliament from 1994 to 1998, Gordhan chair de parliamentary committee dat focus on implementation of de new Constitution den transformation of local government insyd post-apartheid.[13]

Gordhan be chairman of de World Customs Organization from 2000 to 2006.

On 10 May 2009, President Jacob Zuma appoint Gordhan as Minister of Finance, succeed Trevor Manuel. On 25 May 2014, he be replaced by Nhlanhla Nene as Minister of Finance.[14]

Insyd 2014, Gordhan be appointed as Minister of Cooperative Governance plus Traditional Affairs, succeed Lechesa Tsenoli who become Deputy Speaker of de National Assembly of South Africa.[15]

On 14 December 2015, Gordhan be re-appointed as Minister of Finance, replace David van Rooyen who be minister for four days.[16]

Insyd 2018, Gordhan be re-appointed to de Cabinet of President Cyril Ramaphosa as Minister of Public Enterprises, take over from former Minister Lynne Brown. He oversee state-owned enterprises include de likes of Eskom, SAA, Denel, den odas.[17]

Gordhan not receive enough branch nominations to include on "Top 200" list of people nominate for election to de ANC National Executive Committee ahead of de party ein 55th National Conference insyd December 2022. At de conference, he be one of number of high-profile ANC leaders to lose ein seat on de NEC.[18]

Gordhan retire from politics at end of sixth administration of South Africa ein democratic government. Ein intention to retire announce insyd March 2024.[19]
