Mzameni Richard Mdakane (born 1 January 1955) be a South African politician wey represent de African National Congress (ANC) insyd de National Assembly before from 2009 until 2019, when he fail to gain re-election, den again from March 2023 until May 2024. Before dat, he represent de party insyd de Gauteng Provincial Legislature for fifteen years from 1994 to 2009; he sanso serve a term as Speaker of de Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2004 to 2009.
Early life
[edit | edit source]Dem born Mdakane on 1 January 1955 insyd Dundee (later know as KwaThalane) insyd de former Natal province. Ein mommie be a domestic worker den ein poppie be a migrant worker.[1] After he finish high school, Mdakane move to Johannesburg, where ein poppie work, den grow more active insyd anti-apartheid youth politics, include through de Alexandra Civic Organisation den de ANC underground.[1]
Political career
[edit | edit source]Mdakane first be elected to de Gauteng Provincial Legislature insyd 1994, represent de ANC, den he be re-elected to ein seat insyd 1999 den 2004. After de 2004 general election, he sanso be elected, unopposed, as Speaker of de Gauteng Provincial Legislature.[2]
After a full legislative term as Speaker, Mdakane stand for election to de National Assembly, de lower house of de national Parliament, insyd de 2009 general election. He serve ten years insyd de National Assembly, secure re-election to ein seat insyd de 2014 general election. After de 2014 general election, he sanso elect unopposed to chair de Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance den Traditional Affairs.[3]
Insyd de 2019 general election, Mdakane stand for re-election to de National Assembly, but he be ranked 144th on de ANC ein national party list den no secure a seat.[4]
On 16 March 2023, he enter de National Assembly as a replacement for former Nathi Mthethwa, who resign as a Member of Parliament after he ax insyd a cabinet reshuffle on 6 March 2023. He no stand insyd de 2024 general election den leave parliament.[5]
