Rukungiri Water Supply and Sanitation Project
Rukungiri Water Supply and Sanitation Project (RWSSP), wey dem dey call am Rukungiri Water Supply and Sewerage System too, be water intake, water purification, water distribution plus wastewater collection den disposal system wey dey Rukungiri town for Western Region of Uganda. Wen dem finish de project, e go fit supply 9,600 cubic meters (9,600,000 L) of water every day give about 120,000 people wey dey Rukungiri town plus de nearby communities for Rukungiri District den sam parts of Ntungamo District. World Bank plus Government of Uganda dem dey fund de infrastructure development project together.[1][2]
Location
[edit | edit source]De new water treatment plant dey Kabingo Village, Kebisoni Sub-county, for Rukungiri District.[2] Kebisoni dey about 12 kilometres (7 mi) southeast from Rukungiri Town centre.[3]
History
[edit | edit source]For 2016, World Bank plus Government of Uganda give contract to Indian company Technofab Engineering make dem do dis project. But by March 2021, afta more than five years from de time dem award de contract, na only about 35 percent of de work dem plete for project wey dem plan say e go last just two years.[1][2] For March 2021, dem terminate de contract wey dem get plus de Indian contractor, den give National Water and Sewerage Corporation de responsibility make dem fini de project.[1][2]
Overview
[edit | edit source]As part of government effort make enough potable water reach Rukungiri District, Government of Uganda plus oda development partners come plan de Rukungiri Water Supply and Sanitation Project. Dem divide am into two phases: Phase I plus Phase II. De total budget for both phases be USh44 billion (about US$12 million).[4]
Phase 1
[edit | edit source]Phase I include construction of new raw water intake for Kahengye River plus pumping station. Dem go pump de raw water go new water treatment plant for Kabingo Village, Kebisoni Sub-county. Dem go build new reservoir wey get capacity of 700 cubic meters (700,000 L) for Mukazi Hill. Dem go build new administration building, power generator plus electromechanical house. Dem go lay almost 40 kilometres (25 mi) of potable water distribution mains.[1][2]
Phase 2
[edit | edit source]Phase II improvements include construction of five reservoirs as de table below show. E sanso go include construction of waste lagoon plus laying 20 kilometres (12 mi) of potable water distribution mains. NWSC dey plan build public toilets for Rukungiri town make e help solve sewerage needs for de urban centre.[1][2]

Oda considerations
[edit | edit source]Afta Phase II finish, de whole system go fit supply 9,600 cubic meters (9,600,000 L) of clean water every day. People wey dey Rukungiri District need about 3,000 cubic meters (3,000,000 L) of potable water every day. Before dis project, dem dey get only 600 cubic meters (600,000 L) every day. Dem report say di project cost USh44 billion (about US$12 million).[4]
Completion
[edit | edit source]On 24 November 2022, dem officially hand over de completed water supply den sanitation project give Uganda Ministry of Water and Environment through Engineer Silver Mugisha, wey be de CEO of National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC). NWSC serve as de general contractor for dis project. De water den sanitation parastatal still become de operations den maintenance contractor. Dem expect say de project go serve about 163,000 people for Rukungiri Town, parts of Rukungiri District plus parts of Ntungamo District, at least till 2040.[5]
