Yinka Shonibare CBE RA (born 9 August 1962), be a British artist wey dey live insyd de United Kingdom. Ein work dey explore cultural identity, colonialism den post-colonialism within de contemporary context of globalisation. A hallmark of ein art be de brightly coloured Ankara fabric he dey use. As Shonibare be paralysed for one side of ein body, he dey use assistants make he make works under ein direction.[1]
Early life den education
[edit | edit source]Na dem born Yinka Shonibare insyd London, England, for 9 August 1962, de son of Olatunji Shonibare den Laide Shonibare.[2][3] Wen na he dey three years old, ein family move go Lagos, Nigeria, wer na ein poppie practise law. Wen na he dey 17 years old, Shonibare return to de UK make he take ein A-levels for Redrice School.[4][5] For de age of 18, he contract transverse myelitis, an inflammation of de spinal cord, wich result in a long-term physical disability wer one side of ein body be paralysed.[6][7]
Shonibare study Fine Art first for Byam Shaw School of Art (now Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design) den then for Goldsmiths, University of London, wer he receive ein MFA degree, wey he graduate as part of de Young British Artists generation. Dey follow ein studies, Shonibare work as an arts development officer give Shape Arts, an organisation wey dey make arts accessible to people plus disabilities.[3][8]
