De form de union for 1982 insyd as sam black mine workers union, for de initiative of de Council of Unions of South Africa top. Na dema first leader be Cyril Ramaphosa, wey ebe ein tym wey de union grow rapidly, wey dem win bargaining recognition from de Chamber of Mines for 1983 insyd.[1]
NUM campaign successfully for 1980s insyd for de end of de job reservation system, sam system wey ensure say dem allocate de best-paid jobs give de whites. Na de union be sam founding affiliate give de Congress of South African Trade Unions for 1985 insyd.[2] For 2001 insyd, e absorbe de Construction den Allied Workers' Union,[3] while for 2021 insyd e absorbe de Liberated Metalworkers' Union of South Africa. Dem complete de merger for 2021 insyd.[4]
Na NUM dey affiliate internationally plus de International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine den General Workers' Unions.
