Prior to make he join Gombe State University as ein pioneer vice chancellor wen na dem establish de varsity insyd 2004, Mahdi serve insyd de same capacity for Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for period of four years. Na he be de Vice Chancellor of Gombe State University since ein inception insyd 2005 til 2014, wen de then governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo,[9] appoint Ibrahim Umar as de next Vice Chancellor of de varsity.

Before ein appointment, na professor Ibrahim Umar be de Dean, Faculty of Science den Postgraduate School of de varsity. Na dem born am insyd 1958 for Nafada Local Government Area,[10] Gombe State insyd.

De current vice chancellor be professor Aliyu Usman El-Nafaty as de 3rd Vice Chancellor of Gombe State University, wey dey succeed professor I.M Umar after de expiration of ein tenure in 2019.[11][12][13]
