Tono Dam be among de largest agricultural dams for western Africa, e dey Kassena-Nankana District insyd Upper East Region, northern Ghana. E be 2km long dam wey dey irrigate like 2,490 hectares of land.[1][2][3]

History

Dem start dey construct de dam insyd 1975 by one British engineering company be, dem bell am Taysec. Dem plete am insyd 1985. E be Ghana Government wey establish am, de idea be say ego promote food crop production all year by small scale farmers. Dem provide managed irrigation scheme give dem. E be de Irrigation Company of Upper Region (ICOUR) wey dey manage de dam.[4]

Rehabilitation

Insyd 2008, na dem rehabilitate de concrete slabs insyd de main gravity canal of de dam.[5] De Ghana Government under The Ghana Commercial Agriculture Project (GCAP) secure funding from World Bank den USAID make dem rehabilitate de Dam.[6]

Impact

De dam serve about seven communities, ein ability make e provide water for irrigation all year round increase de cultivating of rice, soya bean, den tomato. Dis improve de livelihoods of local farmers. De dam dey form a lake plus a notable bird habitat.

Disease

De condition of de dam dey make am ideals for de bleeding of de schistosomiasis parasite. Dis parasite dey invade de body thru de skin den dey reside insyd de intestinal tract anaa walls of de bladder. E fi cause painful bleeding den sterility, if dem lef am untreated.[4]
