Joseph Charles Jacques Desiré Baissac (1940[1] – 4 February 2023),[2] dem know am professionally as Vaco, na he be a Mauritian artist, dem best know am for ein depictions of island life thru painting, stained glass, sculpture, jewellery design den ceramics.[3]

Na Vaco be a defender of de Mauritian Creole language den de idea say all Mauritians fi communicate thru a common language be integral to de culture of Mauritius, so much so dat na he say he paint de Creole language wey he be identified as a Creole artist.[4]

Early life

Na he be de eldest of four kiddies, Vaco grow up insyd Curepipe.[5] Na ein poppie Yves Baissac be de town architect wey na ein bro Jean Claude Baissac be anoda well known Mauritian artist.[6]

He attend St Joseph's College, Curepipe wey na he be active insyd de local art den theater scene from ein teens. He lef Mauritius insyd 1964 make he study art insyd Paris den Brussels.[7] Then he move go Southern Africa wer na he own den operate a number of restaurants buh na he still be an active artist. He return to Mauritius insyd 1990 wey he cam turn a full time professional artist insyd 1994.
