Dema History

[edit | edit source]

Founder

[edit | edit source]

De first African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) start for Muizenberg wey dey near Cape Town, wey Neil Turok form am for 2003, as na he be Chair of Mathematical Physics for Cambridge University. Neil Turok be de kiddie of Ben Turok, wey be ANC MP. For 2008 insyd, Turok cam turn Executive Director of de Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, wey dem replace am plus Dr. Robert Myers for 2019.

AIMS South Africa be partnership between de following universities: University of Stellenbosch, University of Cambridge, University of Cape Town, University of Oxford, University of Paris-Sud, den University of the Western Cape.[1]

Dema Mission

[edit | edit source]

Teaching den research

[edit | edit source]

De AIMS institutes dey teach both basic den applied mathematics, wey dey cover chaw mathematical applications for physics ( wey dey including astrophysics den cosmology), quantitative biology, bioinformatics, scientific computing, finance, agriculture modelling, den so on. De one for Senegal dey propose courses for both French den English. Apart from de academic programmes, AIMS South Africa get one research centre for interdisciplinary areas like cosmology, computing, den finance. For 2015 insyd, na AIMS Cameroon dey plan say ego launch ein own research centre wey go host resident den visiting researchers from universities for Cameroon den beyond.[2]

Community service

[edit | edit source]

De AIMS institutes dey provide community services. AIMS Senegal develop one innovative teaching module give secondary school maths teachers wey epartner plus local businesses so say ego raise funds give de creation of one national contest for computer applications den mathematical modelling top, wey edey focus say ego find development-oriented solutions. AIMS South Africa dey direct de AIMS Schools Enrichment Centre for primary den secondary school teachers, wey esana dey organize public lectures, workshops, den master classes wey edey support maths clubs for schools wey dey across de country. Scholars den lecturers from AIMS Ghana equip teachers for Biriwa Junior High School plus one innovative teaching module.[2]

Dema Structured Masters programme

[edit | edit source]

De main programme of AIMS South Africa be one 10-month Structured Masters programme for de Mathematical Sciences insyd. Dem upgrade de programme for 2012 from one Postgraduate Diploma. De master's degree be from de three South African universities wey dey for partnership insyd. Students dey comot from Africa fi apply for full scholarships, wey edey include travel, accommodation, tuition, den stipend. AIMS be commited say ego make shoddies participate chaw for science den make sure say de student body go represent different regions for de African continent.

De goal of de programme be say ego produce students wey be capable of doing sam high quality research-based master's degree. Dem dey place special emphasis for intuitive understanding, problem solving skills, collaboration, scientific writing skills, den computer modelling top by say dem go use Free Software such as SageMath, SciPy, den R.

AIMS dey offer bursaries for chaw alumni continuing studies top for South Africa.

[edit | edit source]

For AIMS Research Centre insyd students, often AIMS alumni, dem dey study towards sam MSc anaa PhD degree under supervision of sam resident researcher for Mathematical Biology den Mathematical Finance.

Research centre

[edit | edit source]

AIMS South Africa dey host sam research centre wey open for May 2008 insyd.

School Enrichment Centre

[edit | edit source]

AIMS South Africa dey host sam School Enrichment Centre wey dey offer free learning resources den professional development courses give South African mathematics teachers.[9]

Workshops den conferences

[edit | edit source]

AIMS South Africa regularly dey host short conferences anaa workshops for mathematics den ein applications insyd, especially for physics, mathematical finance, epidemiology insyd. Oda topics dey include scientific modelling anaa system administration plus Debian GNU/Linux as sam platform.
