De Regions of Ghana dey constitute de first level of government dema subnational admin wey dey for Republic of Ghana insyd. For 2020 der nu, sixteen regions wey dey now,[1] wey dem san divide dem go 260 local metropolitan, municipal den district assemblies (or MMDA's) secof administrative purposes.

Current regions

Na former ten regional boundaries wey dem officially establish for 1987 insyd, ebe dat tym wey dem inaugurate Upper West Region as de freshest administrative region. Although dem officially inaugurate am for 1987 inside, de Upper West Region already dey function as administrative unit since de tyme dem break am from de Upper Region for December 1982 inside, before de 1984 national census.[2] De referendum wey dem take create six fresh regions happen for 27 December 2018 wey dem approve all.[3]

Independence - 6 March 1957

For Independence for March 1957 insyd, de Northern Territories, Trans-Volta Togoland den de Gold Coast cam togeda wey dem form Ghana. Initially five regions wey dey. Dem combine Trans-Volta Togoland plus part of de Eastern Region den Northern Territories go form de Volta Region.

Post-independence den First republic

For 4 April 1959 insyd, dem officially split Ashanti Region go de Ashanti den Brong-Ahafo Regions. Dis dey follow de Brong Ahafo Region Act No. 18 of 1959.[7] Na dis dey line insyd plus wat de Brong Kyempem movement dey campaign for, wey ebe recognition of de Bono people as sam separate ethnic group from de Ashantis plus dema own region.[5]

For de day Ghana cam turn republic, 1 July 1960 insyd, dem split Northern Region go de Northern den Upper regions wey e raise de number of regions go seven.[6][7]

Second Republic

For de second republic insyd, dem split de Western Region go Western den Central Regions, wey emake eight regions in total. Dem do dis ahead of de 1970 population census. For 1971 insyd, dem merge Sekondi den Takoradi go form Sekondi-Takoradi, de new capital of de Western Region.[5][6]

PNDC ein era

De Provisional National Defence Council wey na ebe de military government wey dey power between 31 December 1981 den January 1993 insyd promulgate de Greater Accra Law (PNDCL 26) of 23 July 1982 wey create de Greater Accra Region. Dis make de Accra Capital District, wer de national capital, na Accra den de Ada Local Council, both areas for de Eastern Region parts of de new Greater Accra Region insyd. For de following year 1983 insyd, dem divide de Upper Region go Upper East Region den Upper West Regions, wey e bring de total number of regions go ten.[6][7]
